Next Steps

After reviewing her current condition, Trish's surgeon ordered the TSLO brace removed. This is a full chest, clam shell like brace that Trish wore every time she was sitting up. It was great to get rid of this thing, but she is now presented with a new set of problems.

The purpose of the brace was to provide stability when Trish was upright and protect her spine at the site of her surgery from further injury. She was originally told that she would need this brace for 8-12 weeks. But with only 5+ weeks passed since her surgery, this shows how quickly she has healed. Now that her spinal bones have fused with the screws and metal rods, there is no danger of further injury to her spinal cord.

With the brace gone, Trish must relearn all her balance and transfer skills. Yesterday, she said she felt like a cork bobbing on the ocean when she sits in her wheelchair. This feeling of instability was very unsettling, but should go away after additional physical therapy to help her regain her balance.

Trish and Scott are now making plans in earnest for Trish's return home. If all continues to go well, she may be released from the hospital in two weeks or less. After release, she will continue her PT & OT sessions on an out-patient basis for several months. She will be traveling back to St. Joseph's from her home in Queen Creek two days per week.

Ahhh! It must feel good to get that brace off. I can't believe that you might go home in a couple of weeks. Your hard work is sure paying off. I'm sure the balance thing will correct itself just as fast as everything has.
Take care, love ya,
Laura

Hi Trish: We have really missed you in POD 1 these last 2 years. You are making amazing progress! I wanted to tell you..when I was about your age I was diagnosed with cancer and needed 2 years of treatment to get back to health. At the time, my 2 sons were very young: one was 3 years old and the other one was only 3 months old. I prayed to God everyday, please let me be here to see them graduate from high school. Well..now they are 21 and 17 years old; my youngest son will be a senior this year. Prayer, an excellent doctor and keeping my sons' pictures next to my bed at all times got me through it all.
You and your sons have a wonderful life ahead! You are an awesome, beautiful mom; I have seen you at school with your boys. It seems like just yesterday they were playing in my preschool class!

What progress! It must feel good to get that brace off.

When you go home, how about a sign-up list to help you go from home to therapy. If we all take turns, the transportation duties can be shared and give those of us who want to help, something to do.

Trish- Yeah! No more brace- although Parker and Hunter had done some great art work on it! :) Your progress amazes me every day when I check on your blog! Thank your dad for sharing! You are a true inspiration to so many!! Can't wait until you can come home! I'm free on Monday's and Friday's, so put me on your list of helpers for driving you or the boys or whatever!! I'm not such a great cook- but I love to clean and do laundry! There are so many of us who want to help- take advantage of it!! Enjoy the weekend and we're all sending positive thoughts for another good week in your rehabilitation- another step toward going home!!
Love,
Kelly

Hey Trish, I was on vacation last week and one of the very first things I wanted to do on Monday was check your Blog. I couldn't wait to see the progress you had made in a week's time. I was so excited to read that you no longer have to wear that brace. Hopefully you will be alot more comfortable once you get use to being without it.
You look so good in all your pictures. You have such a beautiful smile and from all the comments you are also beautiful on the inside.
I talked with Tiffany Davis yesterday (Jerome's wife). She said that Jermone had called you. He is such an amazing person. Every year when Miss Rodeo America comes to Greensboro I always take them to Jerome's ranch. It is truly amazing what he has done with his life since his accident. Like you, he is always smiling. He and Tiffany are very positive about the future.
Keep up the hard work because it's definitely paying off.
You, Scott, and the boys are in my thoughts and prayers every single day.
Love ya, Pam Baker - Wrangler
